  March 2010

March 3 Wake Up Call: Central Jersey Invasive Species Strike Team
Guest Speakers: Melissa Almendinger, Invasive Species Project Coordinator, URWA & Michael Van Clef, Invasive Species Partner, FOHVOS
Time: 8:00am - 9:30am
Location: Jam Cafe, 89 Main St., Peapack
RSVP: Kate Dean at kate@urwa.org or 908.234.1852 x16
Cost: $15

Members of the Strike Team are working to find and destroy new populations of invasive plant species on public and private lands across central New Jersey. Ms. Almendinger will talk about emerging invasive plants they are finding and the Early Detection/Rapid Response method which can be used to control them. She will also describe how landowners can get involved in the important work to stop the spread of invasive plants. URWA encourages every landowner, from homeowners with ¼ acre lots to organizations that own or manage open space, to help stop the spread of invasive plants. URWA and the Strike Team offer training and resources to help facilitate the process.

  March 14 Woodcock Watch
Time: 6:00pm to 7:30pm
Location: Fairview Farm Wildlife Preserve

Come learn about the American Woodcock, a bird with a fascinating courting ritual that takes place on warm evenings in the early spring each year. The male woodcock begins his “peenting call” at sundown. To attract a female, he first struts in circles on the ground and then takes flight, circling and whistling 100 feet high. The whistling turns into a high pitched twittering, ceasing suddenly as the lovesick bird flutters to the ground, only to begin the dance again. The woodcock is so caught up in his romantic ritual that the observer can get close to this otherwise evasive bird! Of course, we can’t guarantee a sighting, but the sunset at Fairview Farm alone is worth the visit and if the “Singing Field” is quiet you can listen to the sounds of the evening! Sunset will occur at 7:03 p.m. Early arrivers will have time to go for a walk through the woods; everyone should plan to arrive no later than 6:30 to park your vehicle and walk to one of the fields while there is still light in the evening sky!
