URWA's Strategic Plan

In December 2007, the Upper Raritan Watershed Association’s Board of Trustees and Staff worked in partnership to update the organization’s mission and vision statements. In addition, the following 10 strategic planning goals were adopted.

“Our mission is to ensure the protection of the natural resources of the Upper Raritan Watershed through education, advocacy, land preservation and stewardship.”

Vision Statement: “Citizens throughout the region are well informed and engaged in efforts to sustain the health and integrity of natural systems and resources of the watershed. URWA is committed to making this vision a reality.”

Strategic Planning Goals for 2007 through 2013

  1. URWA will adopt comprehensive policies and procedures to provide for the effective governance and management of the organization.
  2. URWA will diversify its revenue sources, expand its membership base and cultivate donors to finance additional staff positions and fully fund annual operating expenses.
  3. URWA will develop and implement strategies and systems to attract, utilize and retain volunteers who support the operational work of the organization.
  4. URWA will establish a Conservation Plan to provide strategic guidance for the programs and activities of the organization.
  5. URWA will expand its capacity to analyze and interpret data relevant to watershed stewardship issues.
  6. URWA will expand its current stream monitoring program to establish a comprehensive water quality monitoring program.
  7. URWA will effectively steward all lands for which it accepts responsibility by developing and implementing comprehensive Management Plans for each of its fee-owned properties and using a systematic method to accept and administer conservation easements.
  8. URWA will share its expertise through clearly defined education and advocacy activities to promote a conservation ethic, encourage environmental stewardship and influence public policy.
  9. URWA will remain vigilant and proactively address watershed issues.
  10. URWA will adopt and implement best management practices to ensure that its day-to-day operations reflect a commitment to environmental sustainability.
